Erica, Matthias and Jeronimo

Los Amigos was opened in june 2004 by me, Matthias and my local business partner and good friend Erica. I had left Holland a year before to travel and visit my brother who was working in Guatemala with a NGO.

It was never my plan to settle in Guatemala but the beauty of Central America made my decision easy! I lost my  plainticket back, my parents cleared my flat out and now I was a dutch Chapin! (nickname for Guatemalans)

Erica had been working as a talented chef for many years and we came to the idea of starting something for ourselves: The first Youth Hostel in Flores…

Originally I am a journalist and photographer and doing this was one big jump in the blank… but looking back it was the best jump I’ve ever made!

Building up Los Amigos

The first days we were going crazy running around like crazy chicken but after two weeks we were saved by a mysterious stranger coming out of the jungle: Jeronimo, the third face behind Los Amigos!

It turned out to be a perfect combination! Ericas miracles  in the kitchen with Jeronimos creativity and green eye and my own enthousiasm and vision made it real fun working together.

Since that day the three of us worked every day with love, sweat and joy to create something special in the heart of Flores!

But it would never have worked if it wasn´t for you guys,  all the thousands of backpackers who checked out this new
place in town which was not yet in any guide books…  Helping us out,  sharing your adventures and creativity and filling the place with a positive energy! Thanks for that…

We hope all of you may have a great, meaningful and happy journey crossing these mysterious lands of the Maya and a
