On arrival

On your way into Flores, you will encounter freelancers that will try to sell you tickets and tours to Tikal and other destinations in Guatemala. They walk on the streets and follow you to the hotel and are also selling inside of the buses. They are the people that drop people off in front of  hotels around the island.

Make sure you don´t end up in unexpected situations on arrival in Flores

Some of these guys are really honest and affiliated with an association. (known as REPSA) But there are a few that are spreading false information. They get special commissions or privileges in other hotels on the island and try to keep travellers away from Los Amigos because we don´t give them these rewards.

Please keep in mind that some of these freelancers are not  looking out for your best interest. Their main interest is to make a quick dollar. Since they get paid high commissions at other hotels they will go to extreme lengths to drop you off elsewhere.

We often hear reports of them making fake phone calls (A girl speaking fluent English is put on the mobile phone which is passed to one of the passengers and she pretends to be working in our hostel. She will say that we are all full and you will be dropped off elsewhere.)

In reality we have plenty of space most days. So please do not fall for these sneaky scams because people have ended up in hotels that were not at all to their satisfaction and have ended up paying almost double prices for their (Tikal) tour.

If you are not sure if we have space, we recommend you to just come by the hostel and check for yourself. In most cases we have plenty of rooms and dorms. Like I said, the majority of these freelancers are affiliated in a fairly reliable cooperative (REPSA) just trying to make an honest buck, so we are not saying you shouldn´t buy any tickets with them. On the contrary, that is completely up to you. Of course we can´t be held responsible for any tickets that are not sold by our own travel agency.
